This year’s graduates from the New Era College Drama & Visuals Department are proud to present “Crush! It” a showcase of their final year video and art works.
The title Crush! It, or 破.像, is derived from two Chinese words, 破(pò) and 像(xiàng).
破(pò) literally means to break, destroy, or to Crush. In the realm of art, filmmakers not only strive for beauty in the images, but to also see the world from their own perspective with their imagination. Their goal is to “Crush” the superficial appearances of images, and to look beyond them into their meaning in the creation of an artwork.
像(xiàng)refers to visible images, or those in our imagination, the intangible “It”. As filmmakers, we aspire to “Crush” the superficial pursuit of sensory appeal, and to give meaning and depth to our creations. Images not only allow the audience to ponder the meaning behind the film, but also spark the Image-ination of the audience, where everyone has a unique perspective.
“Crush! It” illustrates the relationship between the dreamer and his dreams. This film can be regarded as social commentary, or merely an expression of fresh ideas for a graduating piece. By looking beyond the flashing images on the screen, only will the true meaning of the story transpire.
The five short videos that will be screened include:
“AWAY” written and directed by Yee Yun Ping
“Bye Bye, Black Bird” written and directed by Alison Khor
“Bayang-bayang” written and directed by Wong Sheau Peng
“Hop” written and directed by Vincent Hau
“The Story of Chan Chan” written and directed by Chong Wai Loon
