Calling all wind musicians & percussionists…
AUDITION for klpac SYMPHONIC BAND
The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) will be forming a community-based Symphonic Band under the leadership of Music Director and Conductor Bruce Lee. Like the klpac Orchestra, the klpac Symphonic Band will be a platform for wind musicians and percussionists to develop their skills and perform regularly. The klpac Symphonic Band is scheduled to make its debut in klpac’s Pentas 1 in November 2010.
We encourage all school leavers who used to play with school bands and who wish to continue playing to be a part of this new community band. Of course, other wind music students and percussionists as well as freelance musicians are welcomed to audition as well. Audition details for the all-new klpac Symphonic Band are as follows.
AUDITION DETAILS
Date: 25 April 2010, Sunday
Venue: The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) - free parking
Time: 10.00am – 3.00pm
Instruments: Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Eb Clarinet, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium and Tuba
PREPARATION DETAILS
Note: Candidates must have their own musical instruments. A solo piece by the candidate is an advantage.
Wind Section
Candidates will be asked to play
- Major scale within 4# to 4b in an octave (those who can play 2 octaves will have advantage)
- Different articulation e.g. legato, staccato, accent etc
- Sight-reading piece from Band excerpts - each candidate will be given 1 minute to study the score before playing
Candidate will also be interviewed by the music director
Percussion
Candidate will be asked to play
- Single stroke, double stroke and rolling techniques using drumsticks and timpani mallet (a rhythm pattern with these elements will be provided)
- For mallet percussion instruments, candidates must have the ability to play major scale within 4# to 4b in an octave
- Sight-reading from Band excerpts – each candidate will be given 3 minutes to study the score before playing (candidate must have minimum knowledge to handle indefinite pitch percussion instruments e.g. crash cymbals, bass drum, triangle etc)
Candidate will also be interviewed by the music director
