A nice little piece of video about the recent #BERSIH last Saturday (9 July 2011).
The following is lifted from a forwarded email:
The Krishen Jit ASTRO Fund has been created by ASTRO and Five Arts Centre to encourage and support creative work in Malaysia.  One of the main objectives of Krishen’s pioneering work was celebrating original Malaysian creativity in as varied and alternative ways as possible in all the areas of the arts.

His groundbreaking theatre practice straddled and brought together a wide range of contrasting spheres, producing projects that were inter-disciplinary, multicultural, multilingual and experimental.  Negotiating between academia and practice, tradition and contemporary pop culture, Hollywood and Bollywood, the mainstream and the marginalized, Krishen’s work articulated a Malaysian identity that was ever evolving and encouraged practitioners and audiences to reflect on their lives and societies.

This is the spirit of the Krishen Jit ASTRO Fund.

It's that time of the year when there are plenty of summer music festivals around europe and the US. but the spill over effect is pretty apparent here in Malaysia as well. I've noticed quite a few local events building around the festival hype. One of the biggest is Urbanscapes of course, its a one full day extravagansa of all things music, arts, fashion and whatever else.

The line up this year is rather interesting I must say -

  • Azlan and the Typewriters,
  • They Will Kill Us All,
  • Busco,
  • Khottal,
  • Kyoto Protocol
Of course there was also a competition by main sponsors TM to allow gig goers to vote newer bands in. All in all, it should be a good day for music. However sadly, this writer has chosen to go watch the Lliverpool vs Malaysian 11 at Bukit Jalil.

But, do keep a watch for H.W.C. who should be playing about 3pm on Saturday at Urbanscapes!

Also, if your free on the 21st of july, The Artistic Series will be having an Open Mic session entitled Free for all
All talents are welcomed, music, poetry, comedians, dancers and etc!

It will be happening 9pm onwards at Comida Solaris Dutamas!D2-G3-1, Solaris Dutamas 1 Jalan Dutamas 1, 50480 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

See you guys there!

Earlier in April, I watched Singaporean playwright Alfian Sa'at's Madu II performed at the Actor's Studio Lot 10, directed by U-En Ng and featuring sisters Elza Irdalynna and Inessa Irdayanty. It was quite brilliant: the word play sharp and witty, the acting admirable, the staging inventive. I enjoyed its frank and clever portrayal of two wives who share a husband and household, but it did not resonate deeply on an emotional level—polygamy is a concept, at least in practical terms, quite removed from my daily life.

Parah, Alfian's latest play, also written entirely in Malay, is a very different animal to Madu II. I managed to catch its recent showcase directed by Jo Kukathas of the Instant Cafe Theatre Company at the Annexe Gallery after it's staging in Singapore. Its facebook event page described the play as a mash-up of the late Yasmin Ahmad's swan-song Talentime and national laureate Abdullah Hussain's controversial book Interlok. I was piqued by the blurb but thought it did sound slightly gimmicky. I wanted to catch the play less for it's novel premise (no pun intended) and more to see what this talented Singaporean could write about his pesky neighbours up north.

I received this little message which I think is worth sharing with you folks. If you fit the bill below, get in touch with them!
