Matilda and her puppets, Pierrot, Columbine and Harlequin, are trying to save the animals in Papa Gorgonzola’s circus from their life of misery. With a plot that takes the audience on an imaginative journey from Italy via Africa (to capture the fabled “Gorilla in the Mist”) to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, the knockabout antics of the Commedia dell’ Arte characters – as well as Punch and Judy – provide plenty of fun and excitement.

Matilda will need the resourcefulness of the Malaysian animals and birds she meets as well as the help of the people of Kuala Lumpur if she is going to be able to give the circus animals their dignity and if they’re all going to take part in the Brickfields' 'Carnival of Freedom'.

This year’s production is aimed primarily at children in primary school and will appeal particularly to Standards 1 to 6. Murdoch University is offering a multimedia experience in the Shantanand Auditorium with a magnificent set, spectacular puppets, lavish costumes, original music and a script that blends physical theatre with an appealing storyline.

As with all our productions, we seek not merely to entertain, but to educate as well, in the true spirit of Theatre in Education. Children (and their teachers and parents) will be offered a glimpse into an exciting imaginary world in which the young audience’s decisions could help in saving the day!

Children's Theatre has been a part of Murdoch's drama offerings since 2000 and we recently celebrated ten years of shows for young people. The plays are written by Associate Professor Jenny de Reuck, an expert in Shakespeare and Elizabethan performance art, who runs the Children's Theatre unit at Murdoch University, specifically for second- and third-year students.

The shows play to over 1500 primary school children in their annual sell-out seasons. All our original performances for children combine music, design, acting and dancing in a full-scale theatrical production that strives to educate as well as entertain young audiences.

The Greatest Show on Earth: A Circus Story continues the tradition established at Murdoch of theatre designed specifically for children.

There are 2 performances only, so book early to avoid disappointment!
